Why it matters
This scene marks the dramatic turning point where Sebastian's arrival directly collides with the confusion Viola's disguise has created. For the first time, the twin enters the chaos his sister has unknowingly sparked. The physical violence—Sebastian beating Andrew and Toby—breaks the pattern of verbal wit that has defined the play so far. Unlike Viola, who speaks her way through conflicts and deflects aggression with cleverness, Sebastian responds with action. His confusion is profound: he has no idea why these strangers are attacking him, yet he defends himself decisively. This difference in character between the twins will prove crucial to resolving the play's tangled identities.
Olivia's entrance transforms the scene entirely. She arrives as a corrective force, stopping the violence and immediately redirecting her affection toward what she believes is Cesario. Her gesture—inviting Sebastian inside, treating him with warmth and authority—shows her emotional investment has ripened into possession. She speaks of promises made 'but so late ago,' assuming Sebastian knows exactly what she means. Sebastian's response—'What relish is in this? how runs the stream?'—captures his disorientation perfectly. He has no idea who Olivia is, yet he accepts her invitation with grace. This moment of ironic acceptance sets the stage for the final act's revelations and resolutions.
