What happens
Simonides dismisses the other knights, then reveals to Pericles that his daughter Thaisa has chosen the stranger knight and refuses to marry within a year. Pretending anger, Simonides tests Pericles' honor, threatening to force marriage or declare him a traitor. When Thaisa enters and confirms her choice, Simonides reveals his approval and orders them to marry immediately, delighted by the match.
Why it matters
Simonides orchestrates a test of Pericles' character through apparent deception. By threatening violence and exile, he creates a crucible where Pericles must choose between obedience to authority and defense of his honor. Pericles responds with nobility—he acknowledges the king's power while refusing to accept false accusation, drawing his sword to answer the charge of villainy. This moment crystallizes Pericles' worth: he is neither servile nor reckless, but a man of principle who respects rank while maintaining dignity. Simonides' manipulation, revealed as a kindly test, shows paternal wisdom. He has discerned in Pericles a virtuous stranger worthy of his daughter, and forces him to prove it under pressure.
The scene transforms expectation into revelation through dramatic irony. The audience watches Pericles caught between confusion and courage, unaware that Simonides already approves the union. When Thaisa enters and simply states her desire—'Yes, if you love me, sir'—the test collapses into joy. The king's sudden shift from rage to blessing feels earned rather than arbitrary. What matters most is that marriage here flows from mutual choice and proved virtue, not political arrangement. Pericles and Thaisa's union becomes the play's moral center: a love founded on recognition of the beloved's character, witnessed and sanctioned by wisdom.
