Character

Second Senator in Coriolanus

Role: Volscian senator and military advisor First appearance: Act 1, Scene 2 Last appearance: Act 5, Scene 2 Approx. lines: 10

The Second Senator appears as a representative of Volscian authority, wielding counsel and command in moments of strategic importance. Though he speaks sparingly, his interventions carry the weight of state authority—advising Aufidius on military readiness, speaking to matters of war and honor, and ultimately bearing witness to the play’s tragic conclusion. He embodies the measured, pragmatic voice of governance in Antium, a counterbalance to the more volatile and personal passions of his fellow leaders.

His first appearance comes in the Volscian Senate at Corioli, where he addresses Aufidius with military pragmatism, acknowledging Rome’s readiness to respond to Volscian aggression. Later, when Menenius attempts to reach Coriolanus at the camp, the Second Senator appears as a sentry—one of the guards who denies the Roman access, speaking with the blunt authority of military protocol. He treats Menenius with contempt, regarding him as beneath notice and unworthy of the general’s attention. This encounter reveals the Second Senator’s fundamental loyalty to the military chain of command and his conviction that Aufidius’s cause supersedes any appeal from Rome.

By Act Five, the Second Senator reappears among the Volscian lords witnessing Coriolanus’s return and the revelation of his betrayal. He stands with the nobility of Antium as the tragedy unfolds—first learning of Coriolanus’s treaty with Rome, then hearing Aufidius’s accusations of treachery, and finally witnessing the assassination of the man who had seemed to promise them total victory. His presence throughout anchors the Volscian court as a constant presence of state authority, the human machinery of war and diplomacy, ultimately powerless to prevent the collision of honor, revenge, and human frailty that destroys Coriolanus.
