Hamlet, Act 4 Scene 7 — Summary & Analysis
- Setting: Another room in the Castle Who's in it: King., Laertes., Messenger., Queen. Reading time: ~11 min
What happens
Claudius convinces Laertes that Hamlet killed his father, then manipulates him into a plot: they'll arrange a duel where Laertes will use a poisoned sword. If that fails, Claudius will poison a cup of wine for Hamlet to drink. When a messenger arrives with news that Hamlet is returning to Denmark, Claudius accelerates the plan. Gertrude enters with devastating news that Ophelia has drowned.
Why it matters
This scene marks the culmination of Claudius's manipulation of Laertes. The king exploits Laertes' grief and rage over his father's death—attributing it entirely to Hamlet—to transform the young man into a weapon. Claudius's rhetorical skill is on full display as he persuades Laertes that revenge is not just justified but necessary. The famous question 'Will you be ruled by me?' reveals the king's essential tactic: he doesn't command; he seduces, making Laertes feel like an accomplice in noble action. The poisoned sword scheme represents Claudius at his most treacherous—no longer content with murdering one king, he now schemes to kill Hamlet through deceit wrapped in the appearance of sport.
The sudden appearance of Hamlet's letter shifts everything into urgency. Claudius's plan, which had seemed theoretical, becomes immediately operational. Yet the scene's emotional anchor is Gertrude's final entrance and the news of Ophelia's death. Her description of Ophelia's drowning—surrounded with flowers and songs—contrasts sharply with the men's crude plotting. The scene ends in shock and sorrow, but also in motion: Laertes' rage is rechanneled from suspicion toward action. The poisoned cup becomes a backup plan, a safety net for Claudius's ambition. By scene's end, three separate poisonings are in motion: the sword, the cup, and now Laertes' own emotional wound, which will drive him forward.
