Coriolanus, Act 5 Scene 1 — Summary & Analysis
- Setting: Rome. A public place Who's in it: Menenius, Cominius, Sicinius, Brutus Reading time: ~4 min
What happens
Menenius refuses to join a delegation to Coriolanus, declaring it hopeless. Cominius returns from attempting to reach him, reporting that Coriolanus rejected all pleas and would not even acknowledge their past friendship. He has renamed himself and now speaks only of burning Rome. The tribunes urge Menenius to try, as he alone might succeed. Menenius agrees reluctantly, though he doubts any words can move a man whose anger has consumed him entirely.
Why it matters
This scene crystallizes the play's central tragedy: a man has become untethered from all human bonds. Menenius, who called himself Coriolanus's father, is turned away as a stranger. The rejection is not violent but absolute—Coriolanus literally forbids his own name, accepting only the title forged in fire. Cominius's account of this encounter is devastating because it shows that appeals to gratitude, shared history, and affection are useless. Coriolanus has remade himself so completely that mercy itself becomes an impossibility. The scene demonstrates that banishment has not merely angered him; it has transformed him into something inhuman, a force rather than a person.
Menenius becomes the play's emotional center here, forced to confront the consequences of Rome's decision to exile Coriolanus. His initial refusal and subsequent capitulation reveal his understanding that the city is doomed. Yet his willingness to try anyway shows a loyalty that Coriolanus himself has abandoned. The tribunes' desperation is palpable—they are grasping at the one man who might have leverage, though even Menenius knows it will fail. This scene is a moment of terrible clarity: Rome has destroyed not just a general but a man, leaving only vengeance in his place. The audience watches those who banished Coriolanus come to see their error, but too late.
